It is a sin, not often viewed

The seriousness of gossip and slander within Christian life is a real, and yes it’s a sin and many times wilfully done to feed the persons need to belong or the need to feel important.
My message argues, with heavy reliance on Scripture, that sins of the tongue, such as gossip, backbiting, and slander, are spiritually equivalent in weight to crimes like murder and theft.
“Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventers of evil things, disobedient to parents,” (Romans 1:29-30, Webster)

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit of it.” (Proverbs 18:21, Webster)

Christians who constantly gossip, and backbite or talk doubt, in effect, are talking “death.” Those who speak the Word of God, truth, and genuine love and faith speak “life.
Jesus teaches that being angry with a brother or insulting them which are actions of the heart and tongue, and this assuredly puts one in the same spiritual danger as murder.
James 3:6-8: Describes the tongue as a “world of unrighteousness” and “full of deadly poison.

Here the Holy Spirit speaks of fire in a negative way, that which destroys; the tongue in some way is responsible for all the iniquity in the world. Christians and the unsaved who are constantly speaking in a negative way can literally bring about physical illness in the body.

Continuous negativity, gossip, worry, and self made stress trigger the release of cortisol, which weakens the immune system over time. This mind and body connection does lead to physical ailments like high blood pressure, digestive issues, and fatigue, and yes even death.

The tongue sets us on a particular path, and in this case the wrong path; and it is set on fire of hell. By using the word “hell,” we are made to understand not only the wickedness of the tongue, but as well its destructive power.

All of this, and other things I’ve not even begun to touch on emphasizes that God views all sin as rebellion against His holiness and that gossip, though socially minimized, can be spiritually destructive to congregations, parishioners, individuals and entire communities.

Gossip destroys others’ lives, reputations, and faith, effectively “killing” with words.
It is a definite moral, Christian, and personal responsibility to be aware and careful with what we say and what we choose to listen to, especially when the person talking has a tongue that wags at both ends.

Proverbs 20:19 cautions against associating with a tale bearer, and I will definitely say in truth that tolerating or excusing gossip is itself a participation in the sin.

Gossip, like murder, separates the sinner from fellowship with God and disrupts the body of Christ. It leads to spiritual decay, unanswered prayer, and disunity in the church. Gossip, in is, and becomes not merely “minor sin” but a potent form of moral violence. Treating it lightly blinds believers and the unsaved alike to devastating effects  relationally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Gossip is verbal poison;  Once released, it spreads through a community, leaving injury long after the initial speaker has forgotten their words.

This interpretation calls Christians back to repentance, vigilance over speech, and a commitment to speak words of life rather than death.
