In the true place of reflection, where a man considers the things of God and weighs the Scriptures carefully, there arises an honest question about giving, about this matter we call tithing.
Some people after seeing the awful word ‘tithe’ are now immediately jumping the gun, cutting their noses off to spite their faces, and have hypocritically Pre-judged this writer and the writing. Oh the Pharisees never change do they!
So, if you who have judged this writing before actually reading and understanding it can hold silently your arrogance and “gotta be right all the time” attitude can be parked for a while, you’ll actually learn something here “
What’s the truth??
Some have come to understand that, at one time, the people of God gave in a way that amounted to more than just ten percent,it was actually twenty three and one third percent.
Then we see the clearer mention of a tenth.
so the question follows:
What carries over into the New Testament?
Is there still a tithe?
What does it look like under grace?
If we go back before the Law was ever given, we find Abraham, after his victory, he meets Melchizedek, the priest of the Most High God. And there, Abraham gives a tenth of the spoils. This was not commanded by law. It was not required. It was given freely, out of a heart that recognized God’s hand in his life.
That moment is important. It shows us that giving to God did not begin with Moses or the Law ;it began with faith!
Then, under the Law, things became more structured. Israel was instructed to give a tenth to support the Levites, who had no inheritance of land. There were also other provisions and offerings tied to worship, to feasts, and to caring for the poor. When taken together, it was more than just a simple ten percent. It was a system that supported the whole life of the nation before God.
But we must remember: that system belonged to Israel under the Law.
So firstly we see giving by Faith! Attached to Melchisedec.
Secondly we see the tenth, and the Law.
Thirdly, we come to the New Testament, and things change, not in the sense that giving disappears, but in how it is understood.
Some say tithing is no longer relevant at all.
Others insist the ten percent still stands as a rule.
The truth, as often, sits a little deeper…..So if your arrogance and “gotta be right all the time” attitude can be parked for a while, you’ll actually learn something here “
The Lord Jesus did speak about tithing.
In correcting the Pharisees, He said they were right to tithe, but wrong to neglect the weightier matters which were: Justice, mercy, and faithfulness. At that time, they were still under the Law, and He addressed them accordingly.
Today, after the cross, we do not find a command that sets a fixed percentage for believers.
Instead, we find something else.
We are told, “Let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
Giving is no longer about meeting a requirement,it is about the condition of the heart, your heart, my heart, the truth of the heart and not a list of checked boxes at the end of the day.
Yet…. Yet,….. the principle itself does not disappear.
The example of Abraham still stands.
The connection to Melchizedek, as explained in Hebrews, points us to Christ, our great High Priest. In that sense, giving still has a place, it is simply no longer governed by law, but by grace.
The tithe, as a fixed obligation, is not laid upon the New Testament believer. But the spirit behind it, the honoring of God with what we have, remains very much alive….
For some, ten percent may be a good place to begin. For others, the Lord may lead differently. The important thing is not the exact number, but the willingness of the heart…. Again we see how the condition of the heart is what weighs heavy counting the most.
In the end, it is not about calculation, it is about gratitude. Not about duty, but devotion.
Because under grace, we are not giving to earn favor, we are giving because we have already received it.
