The “great whore” refers to all the religions of the world that ever have been, which are devised by men as a substitute for “Jesus Christ and Him Crucified”; God’s Way is Christ and Him Crucified Alone; as well, the “many waters” are a symbol for multitudes of people. Since the very beginning, most nations have been ruled by some type of religion, these religions were and are devised by men, and even the parts of Christianity that have been corrupted, are labeled by the Lord as “spiritual fornication” as seen in Romans 7:1–4; the addiction of religion; the doing of religion is the most powerful narcotic there is.
Daily, and throughout history, every philosophy, and every human system that tries to offer salvation apart from Jesus Christ and His finished work on the Cross. God never intended salvation to be found through religion, ritual, or self-effort. His Way has always been Christ and Him crucified; nothing more, nothing less, and nothing else.
The Book of Revelation presents this age-old rebellion in its ultimate form under the title “Mystery Babylon, the Great Whore.” This symbol captures the entirety of human religion apart from the Cross of Jesus Christ. It is not merely a city or an empire but the spiritual system of pride that began in Genesis 11 when men sought to build their own tower to heaven. Every philosophy, ritual, and religious invention that substitutes human endeavor for faith in Christ’s finished work shares in this spiritual lineage. The “great whore” in Revelation 17 stands as the embodiment of all faiths and systems that attempt to secure salvation outside the redeeming work of the Christ.
The “many waters” on which she sits represent the multitudes and nations that have been drawn under her influence. Throughout history, nearly every nation has been shaped or ruled by religion,or human devised ways to reach heaven, control societies, and define righteousness. Yet Scripture reveals that these systems, even when clothed in beauty and ritual, are golden cups filled with spiritual abomination. Their allure lies in appearance, but their substance is poison, for they promise peace and transformation apart from Christ and what He did at Calvary, which is literally and eternally the only source of true spiritual life.
Even within Christendom, the danger persists. When forms, ceremonies, darkened worship stages, strobe lights, shofars, honoring the law rather than Grace, and traditions replace the simplicity of faith in Jesus Christ and Him crucified, the Church risks drifting into the same spiritual fornication. The Apostle Paul captured this truth in Romans 7, describing how fellowship with Christ through His death frees believers from the bondage of religious law. Religion, when divorced from the Cross, becomes not a path to righteousness but a narcotic of the soul, an addictive system that soothes pride, and human nature but cannot redeem it.
God’s way has always been singular: Christ crucified, risen, and reigning. Nothing more, nothing less, and nothing else.Scripture further teaches that the “seven heads” of the beast represent the succession of empires that have historically opposed Israel: Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome, with a seventh yet to arise. Out of this final configuration will emerge ten nations, the “ten horns”,reviving elements of the old Roman world.
This coalition will persecute Israel during the first half of the Great Tribulation and will be united under the Antichrist, the “little horn” described in Daniel. For a brief period, these kingdoms will exercise global authority and enforce a single system of worship, eliminating rival religions and exalting the Antichrist as the object of devotion. The true character of Babylon will reach its culmination here: man worshiping his own power, enthroning human pride in place of the Creator.
Rebuilt Babylon, according to this interpretation, will once again become a hub of commerce, wealth, and religion. It will gleam with material splendor even as it festers with spiritual corruption.
Yet Scripture assures that this magnificence will be short, and the same Lamb whom the nations despised will return to judge and to reign. The ten kings, the false prophet, and the beast, which are all symbols of rebellion and deception will be overthrown. The kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of Christ Jesus.
Religion builds towers; redemption lifts the sinner by grace.
Babylon may seem great in the eyes of the world, but in the eyes of God, only one message endures the same message that has stood since Calvary: Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
